Foray Updates
Curt Haney

MSSF Fall forays are underway. The types of forays being scheduled for this fall are:
  • “Quick Start” urban forays are located near public transportation hubs, and are for beginners. These forays will be for adults and are designed to jump start members into how to find and identify all types of fungi.

  • “Forays Afar” These forays are located outside urban areas and require transportation to attend. They are open to adults and members children and are designed for beginners as well as experienced foragers.
(Theses forays are scheduled in the event registration section on the website, and members are invited by e-mail to register for them).
  • “Culinary Group Forays” are urban forays consisting of a short walk into a public green space followed by a foray to a grocery store, farmers market, or specialty mushroom shop. These forays are restricted to members of the culinary group which is open to all MSSF members to join. (A small separate annual dues are required to join the culinary group).

  •  “Pop-Up” forays are announced on short notice, (just a few days in advance) and are located in urban areas near public transportation hubs. These forays are for adults as well as members children and are designed for beginners. There is no limit to the number of members who can attend these forays.
(All Forays are for members only; no guests of members are allowed to attend forays which are “Members only events”. Convince your friends to join the MSSF).
NOTE: Every MSSF adult membership is a family membership. On your membership
profile you can add additional family/household members. That way when you register for a member only event you will be able to register additional family/household members for an event. (Some events may have a set number of members who can be registered for that specific event, “two adults, two adults with 2 children, etc.). (Additional household members are a spouse, partner, child, etc. living at the same physical address as the primary MSSF member).

Quick Start Foray at McLaren Park on November 21st

We had a great turnout Sunday the 21st. The weather cooperated and we found a decent number of species. I counted 23 different fungi and 2 slime molds at the table but couldn't identify a few. Here are the findings with scientific and common name as well web links for more information about the fungi we found. If I missed any fungus you collected, let me know and I'll update my list.

Thanks for attending and hope to see you at a future foray in December or January. Don't forget the Fungus Fair in Orinda on January 23.

There will be forays around the Bay Area on January 22 to collect specimens to display. You can sign up for a foray or volunteer for other tasks needed to have a successful fair. A link to the Fungus Fair is below.
