MSSF 2022 Spring Foray Update

After a very successful fall foray schedule, thanks to Gregg Miller, Mickey Zeif, and Paul Lufkin. The MSSF foray committee is now in the planning stages of organizing several morel/spring king forays in forest burn zones which occurred in 2020 and 2021, as well as unburned areas.
A week long free foray is planned near Mt Shasta for the week before and in conjunction with the McCloud mushroom festival on Memorial Day Weekend.
This foray was attempted a couple of years ago but had to be canceled due to an extended winter snow season. Hopefully this year the snow will melt early enough so we can conduct this foray. The base camp for this foray will be at Trout Creek Campground near McCloud CA. It is a free campground next to a creek with two bathrooms, rock fire rings, and designated campsites which are first come first served. The plan is for a group of leaders to arrive there a week before Memorial Day weekend and occupy several campsites. Then MSSF members can come for few days, or the entire week and finish off the event by attending the McCloud Mushroom Festival.
Other forays will be planned starting in April or May, depending on weather conditions. Last spring the morel season was almost non existent due to the on going drought and lack of spring precipitation. If we receive the spring rains this year we should get lucky in the burn zones from the last two years.
Most of the forays can not be scheduled very far in advance due to forest conditions, forest closures, the wether, and precipitation levels. We will try to schedule the forays as soon as possible and when we feel somewhat confident of success. Most forays will be announced via broadcast e-mail messages to the membership approximately two to three weeks in advance.
Most forays will be camping forays of two to four days in length, some with camping fees and some without. Also some of the forays may have other types of lodging available nearby. In addition, we may be able to schedule a couple of day trip forays to nearby burn zones from the past two years.
So, keep your eyes out for e-mail messages about upcoming spring forays to hunt for morels and spring kings, etc.
