  Marin Mushroom Hike

The hikes are intended to give participants a general introduction to the world of mushroom identification and ecology, and are not culinary collecting forays. It's helpful to bring liquids, lunch, hiking shoes and a love of the outdoors. Be ready to hike up to six miles and one thousand feet elevation gain over irregular terrain. We usually start at 10am and go to 2 or 3.

Last week's hike had a lot of interest, and it filled up by the previous Saturday. The mushroom diversity was high and gave participants a nice introduction.

Enjoy your week.

To reserve, email me, Terry Sullivan, your name, the name of anyone joining you, and a contact phone for last minute changes. I will email directions two days in advance. We cancel for serious storms.

  Evolution and Diversity of Mushrooms

Class by Dr. Tom Bruns and Dr. Else Vellinga.

Location: Valley Life Sciences Building, UC Berkeley and a local field site

The warm, wet winters and the variety of habitats found in California make it one of the best places in North America to find both an abundance and a high diversity of fungi.  This workshop will provide an introduction to the biology and identification of California's mushrooms.  Through a combination of lectures and discussions, workshop participants will learn about the evolutionary history of fungi and the ecological role of fungi in nature. Most of the time will be spent with fresh mushrooms in the lab. This will create hands-on opportunities for learning how to identify mushrooms. A field trip on Saturday will be a highlight of the weekend.

Course fee $253 for members of the Friends of the Jepson Herbarium/$260 for non-members.
