MSSF Meetings

On the third Tuesday of each month from September thru May, the Mycological Society of San Francisco has a General Meeting at the County Fair Building. Note: All regular General Meetings are open to the public. The highlight of each meeting is a speaker with slides on some aspect of mycology and mushrooming: ecology, taxonomy, mycophagy, sociology, etc. Before each meeting members bring collections which are put on display and identified. Refreshments are served before the meeting. Doors open and identification starts at 7 pm and the meeting starts at 8 pm. (The December meeting is replaced by a dinner at a different location.)

  • Hallucinogenic Mushrooms as Entheogens: The Use of Psilocybin Mushrooms in Recreation, Mental Health and Spirituality

Dr Beug's January 2018 presentation at the MSSF general meeting will share the social history of Psilocybin in the US starting with the 1957 Life Magazine article by R. Gordon Wasson, moving through the 1960s message of Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) to “turn on, tune in, drop out.” Then on to the CIA-financed military experiments (at the Menlo Park Veteran's Hospital and elsewhere) to test the use of hallucinogens for biological warfare which leads directly to Ken Kesey (a test subject for these experiments) & the Merry Pranksters “Kool-Aid Acid Tests.”

In 1968, the US Federal government passed laws prohibiting the possession of psilocybin-containing fungi, and the specific chemical psilocin.

While legal restrictions make it difficult, over the past 20 years, research studies have resumed. Since 2010, a series of papers from researchers including Roland Griffiths at Johns Hopkins and Charles Grob at UCLA have revealed many important roles for these compounds in psychotherapy.
Roland Griffiths: Novel psychopharmacological therapies for psychiatric disorders: psilocybin and MDMA
Charles Grob: Hallucinogens as medicine

Michael Beug is Professor Emeritus of The Evergreen State College: over a 32-year academic career he taught chemistry, mycology and organic farming. Additionally, he served for 7 years as Senior Academic Dean, and for many years, as head of the Environmental Studies Division of the university.

  • >Michael started mushrooming after an adult education class taught by Dr. Daniel Stuntz in 1969>/li>
  • >He completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Washington in 1971
  • >Dr Beug began photographing fungi in 1973 after he met Kit Scates and Dr Alexander Smith
His award-winning photographs have been published in roughly 50 books and articles. Dr Beug is principal author (with Alan and Arleen Bessette) of Ascomycete Fungi of North America: A Mushroom Reference Guide.
His articles appear in McIlvainea, The Mycophile, Fungi Magazine, and Mushroom: The Journal of Wild Mushrooming.

Dr Beug's specialties are Ascomycetes, the genus Ramaria, and all toxic and hallucinogenic mushrooms. He currently studies the unique fungal ecosystem associated with Quercus garryana and has found roughly 50 previously unnamed Cortinarius species, as well as many unnamed Hebeloma species, plus new species of Russula, Amanita, Polyozellus, Morchella and Sarcomyxa. Many species he has observed and described from the Pacific Northwest were previously thought to be restricted to California and Southern Oregon.

Michael's hobbies are organic farming and winemaking.
